The Beauty Of Golf Range Finders

If you love golf, one of the most helpful things you can possess is a golf range finder. I, personally, own a SkyCaddie SGX. That's the latest model in the SkyCaddie range. However, that is just my own preference. You may prefer another make or model.

What makes range finders so useful? Well, unless you are a very good judge of distance, they will give it to you! You'll get better at judging distances as you use the range finder.

What are the different kinds of range finders?

1) Laser Range Finders

These require aiming an eye-safe laser at the target. The beam bounces back and the range finder calculates the distance. They look a bit like binoculars. An example is the Bushnell Medalist Laser Range Finder.

2) Classic Range Finders

These are the oldest kind of range finders using a simple optical scope which looks like a small telescope. When you line it up with the flag, you can read the distance off the reticle. These days, there are digital versions giving a digital readout of the distance.

3) GPS Range Finders

These are similar to the car navigation GPS units that everyone is so familiar with nowadays. These give the player the most information about the course. The courses are either pre-loaded in the unit or are downloaded from the manufacturer's website. In some cases, you can put in your own course information if it's not readily available. The SkyCaddie SGX is an example of this kind. SkyCaddie actually map out the courses using survey grade equipment.

Be sure to make sure the courses in which you are interested in are available with the unit. They may give the option to upload your own course information. That sounds like a bit too much work for me when you're paying so much for a piece of equipment.

Some of the most popular makes are SkyCaddie, Bushnell, Golf Buddy, Garmin, Nikon and Callaway. I recommend you go and try out models which appeal to you. For some more information check out my SkyCaddie SGX review.
