Golf Club Bounce for You
Golf club bounce is one of those concepts that virtually everyone is confused about, and also that virtually no one knows how it affects your swing. Golf club bounce, however, is not that difficult to understand.
Pull one of your irons out of your cheap golf bags and really look at the bottom of it. (The bottom is called the sole.) Now, according to how old the club is, the sole is either flat or rounded. They made flat soled irons even in the 1990s. After that, manufacturers started rounding the soles.
As far as older, flat soled clubs, golf club bounce is the angle that the sole of the club makes with the horizontal, when the shaft of the club is held straight up and down. With rounded soles, this is a slightly more difficult idea to envision, but it's still the basic idea of what angle with the horizontal a line drawn from the trailing edge to the leading edge of the sole would make. So, what can golf clubs Bounce bring you?
Bounce and Wedges
Wedges are golf clubs typically used to hit shots of 120 yards and generally have the largest bounce angles of any Titleist golf clubs. The four main types of wedges are the pitching wedge, the gap wedge, the sand wedge and the lob wedge. Of these four, the sand wedge almost always has the largest bounce angle, usually more than 10 degrees.
Sand Shots
Sand shots are easier to hit with a club that has a high bounce angle, such as the aptly named sand wedge. A high bounce angle discourages the club from digging into the sand, which would result in a lack of follow-through in the shot and usually a poor result. Instead, the club "bounces" off the surface of the sand and continues through.
In the Rough
Similar to sand shots, shots out of the thick rough are often helped by clubs with high bounce angles. Whereas a club with little bounce, such as a pitching wedge, tends to dig into the thick grass, a high-bounce club is more likely to skim off the top of the grass and take the ball with it. High bounce does not guarantee a good shot, but it does make it more likely that your club will not simply stick in the ground.
In the Fairway
For a clean shot with a good lie in the fairway, a Callaway ft-iq driver with a low bounce is more appropriate. A high-bounce club is more likely to bounce off the fairway itself, resulting in the blade of the club striking the ball instead of the club face. A club with little or no bounce, such as a pitching wedge, will tend to hit the ball cleanly and take a divot rather than bounce off the fairway surface.
