Which Driver Is Better, Longer Driver Or Shorter Driver
Are you confused on how to choose the proper length driver? Should we choose the longer driver or shorter driver? What is the influence of the length? Some one think shorter driver is better, because it does better in accuracy. Some one think longer driver is better, because it can generate farther distance.
Generally, the graphite shaft drivers at present are with the stand length at 45 inches. Callaway Diablo Edge driver is such a driver with standard length. Professional golf players usually use slightly shorter drivers. They need to take accuracy into consideration. So drivers used on the PGA Tours are less than 45 inches. However, aiming to public common golf players, many brand golf manufacturers try to produce long drivers, such as 45.5 inches or 46 inches. Don Trahan, who is known as The Swing Surgeon, stands for shorter drivers. Trahan is the father of the PGA Tour professional player and is a famous golf instructor. He sometimes choose 43 inches or less drivers for his students. Trahan was very pleased that Sergio Garcia used a very short driver, in 42.25 inches driver. In Trahan's opinion, golfers have to make solid contact to achieve far distance instead of always relying on long drivers.
However Erik Boysen, promotions and tour manager at Graphite Design, has a totally opposite opinions. As a a leading graphite shaft maker, Erik Boysen support longer shafts. Boysen once said that he was for whatever helped golfers to enjoy fun of playing golf and longer driver made most golf players hit a ball funny and easily. So he thought longer drivers made sense to him, especially at the present most manufacturers had made the shaft much lighter than before. In the past, there was no advanced materials and technology for lighter shaft. So the longer the shaft is, the heavier the club is. The weight of premium graphite shafts has reduced to 40-gram range, and many stock shafts available at retail are in the 60-gram range. By contrast, a steel driver shaft could be weight as 140 grams. Also in the past, though graphite shaft was lighter than steel shaft, but it was somewhat fragile and easy to be broken. But now graphite shaft is improved a lot. Boysen said that one extra inch was able to brings about five to seven extra miles more or less per hour in ball speed.
The advanced graphite shaft producers make light and durable shafts, which would have a well performance in long drivers. For example, the famous Mitsubishi Rayon 43-gram shaft has been used by many major brands and kept popular in America for more than two years. Miyazaki has made a new type of shaft, which only weighs 39 grams.
